Criteria

How you can be part of the Leichhardt Sustainable Shopping Guide – Food
In order to be part of the Leichhardt Sustainable Shopping Guide, your organisation must comply with the ‘General Criteria’ below, as well as either the ‘Organic and Biodynamic Criteria’ or the ‘Fair Trade Criteria’. * As of September 2010.
 
General Criteria
The focus of this Guide is on supporting small local businesses & community organisations / enterprises that operate sustainably. To be eligible for listing a business / community group must meet all of the following:

  • Be +small in size and physically located within the Leichhardt Local Government Area (LGA) or if community based /not-for profit have a strong and regular presence in the LGA e.g. meets / undertakes activities in a building / space within the LGA, and;
  • Sustainability is central to the business / community organisations / enterprises vision and practice i.e. it is their core business and provides clear environmental benefits
Organic and Biodynamic Criteria
  • Has an ongoing stock of certified organic and / or biodynamic food products.
Fair Trade Criteria
  • Is accredited as a Fair Trade business and / or has as an ongoing stock of certified / licensed Fair Trade products.

 

Definitions

Certified Organic and Biodynamic
Certified organic / biodynamic means a farm has fully converted to organic. This farm has been farmed organically, usually for a minimum of three years - inspected and regulated by the certifier. When you buy produce from a farm that is certified organic, you are supporting many years of hard work, patience and care for the environment.

Fair Trade
Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seek greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers” (Fair Trade Association of Australia & New Zealand Inc - FTAANZ, 2007).
